Coach FAQ

I won’t be able to make every practice or game. Can I still coach?

Yes! Coaches set their team’s practice schedule so they can pick days/times that are convenient for them. Our scheduler also works with coaches to set a game schedule that works for them. If a head coach does have to miss a practice or game an assistant coach can coach in their place. Most coaches miss at least an occasional practice/game.

Do I need to provide equipment?

No. APLL provides coaches with all the equipment their team needs, balls, bats, helmets, tees, and catchers gear. Individual coaches do not need to provide any equipment for their team.

Am I responsible for finding a field for practices?

No. APLL has permits to six local fields (Bucknell Elementary #1, Bucknell Elementary #2, Belle View Elementary, Bucknell Manor Park, Groveton Heights Park, and Bryant Alternative School). There is a league wide signup sheet available to all coaches. With six fields, there’s almost always something available for a coach looking to schedule practice.

How many practices and games are there per season?

The exact number of practices is set by the coach, but teams should plan on approximately the following number of practices and games per season:

Spring Season
3/4 Tee Ball: 8 combination practices/games
Tee Ball: 8 practices and 8 games
Coach Pitch: 10 practices and 12 games
Minors: 12 practices and 12 games
Majors: 12 practices and 15 games

Fall Season
3/4 Tee Ball: 8 combination practices/games
T-Ball: 5 practices and 8 games
Coach Pitch: 6 practices and 10 games
Minors: 8 practices and 10 games
Majors: 8 practices and 12 games

Can I coach a Coach Pitch team if I’m not comfortable pitching to the players?

Yes. We’ve had Coach Pitch coaches who aren’t able to pitch. The league will make sure to pair you with an assistant coach who is comfortable pitching. For games, coaches are often willing to pitch to both teams if one of the coaches isn’t able to pitch.

What should I work on at practices?

Little League has created practice plans that coaches can use for the t-ball and coach pitch levels. They’re available here:

Tee Ball
Coach Pitch

Additionally, each season we have a preseason coaches meeting where experienced coaches can provide advice and answer new coaches questions.
